Healthy Living (Physical Education) Goals: Value physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction. Understand concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics that apply to the learning and performance of movement. Apply competent motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
Program Description: “Cara Zara’s Hula-Hoop Kid-Fit” puts a modern spin on the classic fun of the hula-hoop by combining music and athletics in an active and engaging fitness program that encourages activity for the pure joy of movement. Class fosters high self-esteem and body acceptance in a happy and creative learning atmosphere. Students participate in non-competitive games and learn the value of teamwork.
Physical benefits of hula-hooping:
v Burn up to 300 calories in a 30-minute cardio class and build physical stamina.
v Incorporate both the right and left side of the entire body and increase flexibility, balance, and muscle strength.
v Improve hand-eye coordination and strengthen both gross and fine motor skills.
Class Details / Rates / Space Requirements
Class Size: 20 Students maximum
Class Length: 30 minutes
Class Location: All classes must be held indoors in a gymnasium
Scheduling Minimum: 2 class minimum. All classes are scheduled back-to-back.
Instructor brings all hula-hoop equipment and portable sound system to the school.
Program Rate 2 groups per day: $110 per class = $220 total
Program Rate 3 groups per day: $110 per class = $330 total
Program rate 4 groups per day: $110 per class = $440 total
Small school rate for 1 group per day (60-minute class): $220

Note: Teacher reserves the right to select and customize the lesson plan and skills taught so that each class is appropriate for the developmental level and age of the students. Customized classes will continue to meet the NC Essential Standards and Clarifying Objectives. At the discretion of the program teacher any student that causes a disturbance that hinders the teaching of the class and/or creates a dangerous environment will not be allowed participate for the safety and enjoyment of the other students.

Lesson Focus: Fitness and Teamwork
Introduction of teacher. Students learn the class rules and teacher’s expectation of student behavior which includes: following directions, awareness of personal space for safety, and the proper use of equipment so nothing is damaged.

Teacher shows the students the step-by-step physical mechanics of the game and the proper technique. During the instructions, the teacher accesses the skills and of the students and customizes the program to fit the developmental level and age of the children participating.

Clarifying Objectives: HF.3.1 / HF.3.2 / PR.4.1 / PR.4.2 / PR.4.3
Teacher organizes the students into two evenly number teams. Students are given instructions for the game and teacher demonstrates the technique of move for success and safety. Students partner with another student from the other team to practice hula-hoop rolls across the gym floor to each other.

Teacher moves from student-to-student and gives personal instruction, assistance and encouragement to each child.

Teacher positions the same teams into the next game: “Hula-Hoop Chase”. Teacher describes that the game is a “chase” not a “race” and that everyone is a winner. Teacher provides the game’s safety rules. Teacher gives step-by-step instructions of the chase game. Students are encouraged to cheer for each other. Teacher spins hoops and children “chase” the hoops trying to catch the hoops before they fall. Teacher incrementally increases the skill and challenge level by adding more spinning hoops to the “chase”.
